Mackay shoppers won’t have to leave the region to buy some of Australia’s top brands when Myer comes to town – and they will be filling up their trolleys come Christmas 2011.
Work has started on a $210 million redevelopment and expansion of Caneland Central – which includes a Myer store – and the official sod turning ceremony is just weeks away.
The two-level Myer will span 10,000 sq m and give Mackay people access to a new range of brands.
It will stock clothing, cosmetics, fashion accessories, homewares, home entertainment and general merchandise.
Myer won’t decide what brands its Mackay store will sell until at least six months before it opens. However, Mackay fashionistas can look forward to shopping like former Miss Universe and face of Myer, Jen Hawkins, with brands such as Country Road, Chanel, and Wayne Cooper commonly found.
Myer spokesman Damian Glass said those involved with the retail chain were excited about opening a Mackay store.
“As the excitement and anticipation builds in the lead-up to the opening of the new Mackay store, we will be focusing on making sure that our customers have a great range of local and international brands across a number of categories to choose from,” he said.
“These are decisions that we will make closer to the opening but we’re really looking forward to delivering a new store that the people of Mackay and the broader community will be proud of.”
The project also will double the number of Mackay escalators. There is one at Mt Pleasant Shopping Centre and one at Caneland car park but two more are included in the redevelopment. There also will be two lifts within the complex, one in Myer and another to service a five-level car park.
When open, Myer will trade Monday to Wednesday and on Friday from 9am–6pm, Thursday 9am–9pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 10am–4pm.
