Caneland will create 3500 jobs

By Melissa Grant.

The first sod will soon be turned on the $210 million redevelopment and expansion of Caneland Central, a project that will create 3500 jobs.

The development includes more than just retail giant Myer — there will be more than 100 complementary speciality stores, helping transform Mackay into a shopping Mecca.

Initial works are under way at Caneland Central and the project’s official sod turning ceremony will be held on May 4.

There also will be a new and expanded food court and a new dining precinct with outdoor cafes fronting the Pioneer River.

And getting a park should be relatively easy with a five–level car park taking Caneland Central’s spaces to 3100.

Furthermore, the major redevelopment will boost Mackay’s economy. It will create about 3500 jobs over time, including 650 on–going retail jobs, and make Mackay a more attractive place to shop.

Mackay Tourism general manager David Phillips said the new–look Caneland Central, coupled with the introduction of Sunday trading, would result in more retail dollars being spent here.

“It will be an added reason for people to come to Mackay — for people who live in the mining towns there will be more incentive,” he said.

“Mackay as a shopping destination for people living in the hinterland is made more attractive by the introduction of Myer and Sunday trading.”

Caneland Central marketing manager Claire Torkington said Lend Lease recognised retail brands were lacking in Mackay.

Ms Torkington said the tenants of the 100–plus specialty stores were yet to be determined but assured Mackay shoppers they were worth waiting for.

“Over the years, Lend Lease has developed strong relationships with some of Australia’s leading national and local retail brands... we look forward to the introduction of many new and exciting brands to complement Caneland Central’s current retail offer,” Ms Torkington said.
