Support for Cogeneration

The Australian Sugar Milling Council (ASMC) yesterday welcomed Monday's announcement from Mackay Sugar confirming their $120 million cogeneration project would go ahead.

ASMC chief executive Dominic Nolan said ASMC was happy to see contracts had been issued and that the project was moving.

Mackay Sugar has spent several years developing the project to a point where both the commercial and policy environments were suited to proceeding.

"This project will deliver a large scale renewable energy generator, in a high energy growth region of Australia," Mr Nolan said.

"It will diversify the income stream of Mackay Sugar, engage in excess of 450 people during construction, increase the regional energy security of Mackay, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"This project is good for the sugar industry, good for the Mackay region, good for Queensland's energy supply and good for the environment," Mr Nolan said.
